Who are we?

We are a collaborative business initiative created to help Destinations, Convention Bureaux, Event Planners and Suppliers drive the adoption and recognition of sustainable practices in their city and in the global events industry.



We identify and compare the sustainability strengths and challenges facing destinations and their event industry.



We support Convention Bureaux, cities and private-public initiatives to efficiently craft and implement long-term sustainability strategies.



We help highlight and promote destinations with strong performance, best practice and innovation.



We engage and inspire corporate, association and government clients to prize destinations with strong event sustainability initiatives.

How do we do this?

Developed by MCI Sustainability Services in collaboration with the founding cities, GDS-Index methodology measures and compares the social and environmental sustainability strategies, policies and performance of the participating destinations.

After Benchmarking, more advanced Cities and Convention Bureaux can approach the GDS-Index team for an in-depth assessment of the destination's strategies, policies and initiatives.

In collaboration with the destination in question, the GDS-Index consultants will assess over 80 criteria across 6 categories: Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement, Monitoring & Reporting, Policy and Incentives, Standards & Education, Marketing Communications and Community Development.

Destinations will receive a detailed profile report highlighting performance and areas for improvement.

In addition to assessments, the GDS-Index Team provides destinations with strategic consulting services to create a long-term sustainability implementation plan.

This process involves the creation of a detailed performance report, 4 days of online/face-to-face training, and the charting of Sustainability Goals and Key Performance Indicators aligned to the commitments of (and materiality issues facing) each destination.
